Family Economics
8. How many hours/week does each family member work?
We have no paid work.
9. Are you satisfied with your jobs? What do you
like/dislike about them?
Lokman graduated from the medical faculty of Sarajevo. He
specialized in neurosurgery and had a good career in Sarajevo's
medical world. He retired 5 years ago, and since that time,
practices acupuncture as a hobby.
Nafja was 19 when she graduated from high school. A few
years later she married Lokman and became a housewife.
Before the war, the young couple were working and happy
with their jobs.
After Arina graduated in accountancy, she bought a shop, with
money lent to her by friends. She sold household electrical
appliances and some kitchen furniture. After Nedzad
graduated from a hairdressing school and before the war
started, he found a job.
10. How much money does each family member earn/month?
No one is bringing enough money home. Nedzad has a
monthly allowance of 500,000 dinars ($3 US). Lokman's
monthly pension is 1,000,000 Bosnian dinars ($6 US). Some

small pension of 2,500,000 dinars ($15 US)/month. Because of
the break-up of Yugoslavia, and Yugoslavian banks, all the
money that people saved, disappeared. Bank officials just announced that they were out of money.
12. What is your family's energy consumption and cost?
Most of the time there is no running water at home, so people
have to collect it at one of the 10 public water pumps. Every 2
or 3 days, there is an expedition. We put jericans on a trolley
and walk 3 or more kilometers, get to the source and queue for
the water. We take as much water as we can transport, carry
the liters up to the apartment, and take a rest. All of this takes
about 3 hours. Many times, Serbs fire on the public water
sources, terrorizing the population. This most exhausting
